Giga view parallel image server performance analysis

    Get PDF
Professionals in various fields such as medical imaging, biology and civil engineering require rapid access to huge amounts of uncompressed pixmap image data. Multi-media interfaces further increase the need for large image databases. In order to fulfill these requirements, the GigaView parallel image server architecture relies on arrays of intelligent disk nodes, each disk node being composed of one processor and one disk. This contribution analyzes through simulation and experimentation the behavior of the GigaView under single and multiple requests, and compares it to the behavior of RAID servers. It evaluates image visualization window access times under various parameters such as load factors and the number of cooperating disk nodes. Under single request, the GigaView image server can be modeled as a single high-throughput low-latency secondary storage device. Under multiple requests, the notions of utilization and maximum sustainable throughput define accurately the behavior of the GigaView

Trimer Formation and Metal-Insulator Transition in Orbital Degenerate Systems on a Triangular Lattice

As a prototypical self-organization in the system with orbital degeneracy, we theoretically investigate trimer formation on a triangular lattice, as observed in LiVO2. From the analysis of an effective spin-orbital coupled model in the strong correlation limit, we show that the previously-proposed orbital-ordered trimer state is not the lowest-energy state for a finite Hund's-rule coupling. Instead, exploring the ground state in a wide range of parameters for a multiorbital Hubbard model, we find an instability toward a different orbital-ordered trimer state in the intermediately correlated regime in the presence of trigonal crystal field. The trimer phase appears in the competing region among a paramagnetic metal, band insulator, and Mott insulator. The underlying mechanism is nesting instability of the Fermi surface by a synergetic effect of Coulomb interactions and trigonal-field splitting. The results are compared with experiments in triangularlattice compounds, LiVX2 (X=O, S, Se) and NaVO2.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in J. Phys. Soc. Jp

HIBISCUS: Hydroxychloroquine for the secondary prevention of thrombotic and obstetrical events in primary antiphospholipid syndrome

The relapse rate in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) remains high, i.e. around 20%-21% at 5 years in thrombotic APS and 20-28% in obstetrical APS [2, 3]. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) appears as an additional therapy, as it possesses immunomodulatory and anti-thrombotic various effects [4-16]. Our group recently obtained the orphan designation of HCQ in antiphospholipid syndrome by the European Medicine Agency. Furthermore, the leaders of the project made the proposal of an international project, HIBISCUS, about the use of Hydroxychloroquine in secondary prevention of obstetrical and thrombotic events in primary APS. This study has been launched in several countries and at now, 53 centers from 16 countries participate to this international trial. This trial consists in two parts: a retrospective and a prospective study. The French part of the trial in thrombosis has been granted by the French Minister of Health in December 2015 (the academic trial independent of the pharmaceutical industry PHRC N PAPIRUS) and is coordinated by one of the members of the leading consortium of HIBISCUS

Parallel pixmap image storage and retrieval

Professionals in various fields such as medical imaging, biology and civil engineering require rapid access to huge amounts of uncompressed pixmap image data. In order to fulfil these requirements, a parallel image server architecture is proposed, based on arrays of intelligent disk nodes, each disk node being composed of one processor and one disk. Pixmap image data is partitioned into rectangular extents, whose size and distribution among disk nodes minimize overall image access times. Disk node processors are responsible for maintaining both the data structure associated with their image file extents and an extent cache offering fast access to recently used data. Disk node processors may also be used for applying image processing operations to locally retrieved image parts. This contribution introduces the concept of an image oriented file system, where the file system is aware of image size, extent size and extent distribution. The performance of the proposed transputer-based multiprocessor-multidisk image server is compared with the performance of an ideal single processor disk array system having an infinite bandwidth between the disks and the processor's memor

The European NEAT program: an integrated approach using acamprosate and psychosocial support for the prevention of relapse in alcohol-dependent patients with a statistical modeling of therapy success prediction.

Multicenter, prospective study in five European countries to observe outcome in alcohol misusers treated for 24 weeks with acamprosate and various psychosocial support techniques, within the setting of standard patient care. 1289 patients were recruited,543 (42.1%)patients were observed for the full 24-week period. The overall proportion of cumulative abstinence days was 0.48. Multiple physical and psychiatric comorbidities and a history of drug addiction were negatively correlated with outcome, as were, to a lesser extent, multiple previous episodes of detoxification, unemployment, and living alone. Older age and stable employment were positively associated with outcome. The difference in the unadjusted proportion of cumulative abstinence days between countries was significant (p< 0.001). Overall, outcome was not influenced by the nature of the psychosocial support provided. Adverse events were generally mild, with gastrointestinal disorders, which occurred in 21.5% of patients.
